Salem—Present

I’m sitting with Ruby who actually seems to be listening to Preston’s words as he talks to us about what he has planned for Drill, but all I can think about is how badly he hurt her. I want to know why he hurt her the way he did, but with all of this talk about Drill, I know I’m not going to have a chance to talk to him until later. I want to get into Preston’s head about Ruby and I’ve spent the whole time I’ve been sitting here trying to think of ways I can do it without him catching on.

“Salem,” Nicolai says, pulling me out of my thoughts.

I look over at him and he nods towards Preston. My eyes cut to him quickly and he’s watching me intently. “You okay, baby?”

“Yes,” I nod. “I was thinking of ways to be sneaky for tonight.”

“Are you okay with going with Ruby by yourself?”

My eyes go wide as I look from Preston to Ruby. “Of course! I thought I was going with—”

“That’s what I’m saying,” he tells me. “Having all of the guys in one place will make them think we have all of the heaviest players in one spot. You and Ruby will go in and get what we’re really after. You two will only have a slim time frame to find anything on him that will help. I don’t suspect this going smoothly and I want you both in and out quickly.”

“We will be fast,” I tell him confidently. “We are going to the same place as the guys, right?”

“Yes, but you won’t be going in with them. I need you two in their computers.”

He doesn’t wait for me to acknowledge what he says before he turns to Elijah, double checking the time of the meeting with Drill. I still can’t believe this is the actual plan because I feel like the guys are all walking into one big trap but it’s my suggestions are never taken seriously when Preston is around. All I can hope to achieve is getting some kind of information that will help us get him out of our lives for good. Why we aren’t simply ambushing him like I know we could also blows my mind a little.

Preston told us Zagan made a deal with Drill to get him to back off, but I highly doubt Drill will take the deal Preston is offering. It won’t be enough for him and I can almost guarantee he will take it as disrespectful. At least if it was me, I’d find it pretty disrespectful. Drill wants our whole city and Preston and Juice are offering him pennies in comparison. I doubt it went this way up in Tennessee with Zagan, but he’s never been as selfish as Preston.

Once Preston finishes barking out orders, we all go to the cars in the front and for once Ruby and I get in one car together and the guys get into another. She sits in the passenger
